Messages for the 2001 World Junior Chess Championship..... Eλληνικά

Sports in our country are entirely connected with culture and mentality. Chess is the obvious activity which combines mental practice with sports, as it is a wisely constructed game which demands the abilities of correct prognosis, combinational thought as well as great amounts of patience, discipline, intuition and courage.

Many battles of survival have been won or have been lost over the chessboard. The big difference between chess and every other game is the fact that these battles have been decided not by means of physical strength or simply luck, but by means of strategy and capability.

I warmly congratulate the Sports Organization of the Municipality of Peristeri for hosting the 2001 World Junior Chess Championship in co-operation with P.S. Peristeri Chess Club and with the support of the Greek Chess Federation. I am sure that with the appropriate preparation, the Greek representatives will perform highly in these games.

Evangelos Venizelos
Minister of Culture

With great pleasure I warmly send my greetings to the organization of the 2001 World Junior Chess Championship.

The hosting of this world event is a top priority for Greece, especially as it concerns a sport which outstands for its intellectual expression and mental effectiveness. The sport of chess is based on the sharpness and complexity of the mind and it organizes not only the awareness but also the actions of people, mainly the younger generation, thus giving youth the necessary supplies for a successful and balanced development of their personalities in all aspects of social life.

The cultural and educational value of chess maintaines it as one of the most precious sporting activities which promotes the spirit of knowledge. All the young chessplayers which will participate in this World Championship can furthermore exhibit their virtues and talent and promote the values of knowledge and sportsmanship.

Georgios Floridis
Minister of Sports

On behalf of FIDE, I welcome all the participants to the 2001 World Juniors and Girls Championship taking place in Athens.

The World Juniors are especially important in the FIDE Calendar as they assist us as Chess Administrators in determining the future direction of our sport through the activities of our Champions of the future.

I am particularly happy that Greece, the home of Olympism, is playing a tremendous role in the staging of major FIDE events, as part of the deliberate contribution of the Greek Chess Federation and its sponsors to herald the 2004 Olympic Games. And, as an active member of the Olympic Movement, FIDE is proud to be part of this process.

Gens Una Sumus.

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov
FIDE President

On behalf of the Municipality of Peristeri, I welcome with great pleasure all the participants of the 2001 World Junior Chess Championship.

This top sport event was awarded for the first time to our Municipality by FIDE and it is the consequence, not only of the historical tradition and rights of the country which gave birth to the ideals of sports, but also of the worldwide recognition of Greece as a crossroad for the modern international sports movement.

The 2001 World Junior Chess Championship is of important significance inside the frame of our country's greater cultural and sports planning towards the 2004 Olympic Games of Athens. We wish every success for the games and its participants.

Theodoros Dimitrakopoulos
Mayor of Peristeri

The Greek Chess Federation gladly welcomes all the young chessplayers, boys and girls, which will participate in the 2001 World Junior Chess Championship, organized in Peristeri, Athens this August.

It is a unique honour for Greece and the Municipality of Peristeri that so many young players from all over the world will compete in the country which will organize the 2004 Olympic Games to achieve world-class chess recognition. Chess is retaining its motto throughout the years: "GENS UNA SUMUS" or "WE ARE ONE FAMILY".

The traditional Greek hospitality is not the only fact which we want our guests to remember from our country. We also want them to learn about modern Greece, a nation dedicated to the ideals of peace & friendship among all people of all countries.

Looking forward to meeting you in Greece,

Georgios Makropoulos
Deputy President of FIDE
President of the Greek Chess Federation

Today, as the need for peace and international co-operation is more crucial than ever, such events give us a wonderful opportunity to stress the determination of our country towards such ideals which are served through the sports movement.

We are in the pleasant position to announce that the organization of the 2001 World Junior Chess Championship is under the UNICEF aegis and we do hope that this event will be organized in a highly successful manner.

We wish everyone a very pleasant stay in Athens,

Lambros Kanellopoulos

In an era where sports commercialization dominates and incidents of violence and corruption are daily news, chess appears to show a different potential.

Junior boys and girls from all over the world will gather in Peristeri this August to fight for a good standing in the World Junior Chess Championship. They will not fight for huge amounts of money or enormous publicity but for the awarding of their hard efforts promoting the still resisting human spirit.

On behalf of the Sports Organization of the Municipality of Peristeri, I welcome all the young participants in this event, which we hope to be the best organized ever.

Ioannis Kalogeras
President of the Peristeri Municipality Sports Organization
